Redistricting Timeline

  1. Feasibility Study – June 13th

    Each year, the Board of Education reviews capital planning options and redistricting scenarios through a feasibility study. The annual student enrollment projection is introduced along with scenarios that are intended to provide a comprehensive look at suggested capital additions, renovations, and any attendance area adjustments that are anticipated within a ten year timeframe.

  2. Attendance Area Committee Meetings – Summer 2013

  3. Board of Education Approval Process – Fall 2013

Summer 2013 Working Committee Meetings

The following meetings involved the members of the county resident-led Attendance Area Committee. The meetings were intended to test planning scenarios in an open forum with residents from each of HCPSS’s planning areas.

  1. July 9, 2013

    Members were introduced to the planning process and began working on planning scenarios. Two plans were proposed, one for each group, and the initial steps of these plans were submitted.

  2. July 16, 2013

    The committee evaluated Plan 1 & 2 from the July 9th meeting and decided to table Plan 2. Plan 3 was started in lieu of tabling plan 2.

  3. July 23, 2013

    The group that generated plan AAC1 decided that it would be important to focus on school utilization. They were also interested in limiting the distance traveled by each student to their newly designated school. The group that generated plan AAC3 resolved to reduce the number of students who would be moved by their redistricting proposal.

  4. July 30, 2013

    There was a potential to merge the best features of both plans into one new plan. The committee agreed that it would be more advantageous to work from this point forward as a full planning committee rather than as two separate groups.

  5. August 6, 2013

    The committee discussed crowding at various middle schools and the way these crowded schools would factor into redistricting. After discussion of issues they wanted to resolve from the July 30th meeting, committee members expressed that they were satisfied with their original plan, titled AAC4AA.

Fall 2013 Redistricting Presentations and Work Sessions

All fall meetings held at the Dept. of Education were videotaped. You may view them on-demand through HCPSS TV.

  1. September 10 & 11- Public Feedback Meeting

    The public was able to provide feedback to staff about the plan that had been generated by the Attendance Area Committee.

    Superintendent’s Recommendations

    The Superintendent’s plan makes use of three recommendations from the Attendance Area Committee (AAC). Redistricting is recommended at the middle school level involving the following schools: Bonnie Branch MS, Elkridge Landing MS, Hammond MS, Lake Elkhorn MS, Lime Kiln MS, Mayfield Woods MS, Murray Hill MS, New MS #20, and Patuxent Valley MS.
