Restricting Access to Content on Student Devices

To comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act, HCPSS uses content filters to restrict students from accessing certain sites. The content filters block sites that are placed in categories that have been found to be not age appropriate such as drugs or alcohol, hacking or deemed mature in nature. Some categories are blocked to minimize distractions such as games and social media. HCPSS additionally utilizes content filters to block student access to most AI sites.

Student Chromebooks have a content filter installed so that regardless of the network a student is connected to, including their home internet, the sites they are accessing on the HCPSS device are filtered. HCPSS additionally filters access to internet content on personal devices when they are connected to the HCPSS network.

Additionally, parents of students in middle and high school can allow or restrict direct access to the YouTube website. Direct access to YouTube is blocked for elementary school students. All students will be able to view embedded YouTube videos, such as those curated by their teachers and embedded in Canvas courses, regardless of the parental settings.

If you notice that your student is accessing a site that you believe is inappropriate, please contact the school to discuss the issue. They can review the site and request the site to be evaluated.
