Lightspeed Systems
In the Howard County Public School System, teachers may opt to use Lightspeed Classroom and parents/guardians are able to access the Lightspeed Parent Portal.

Lightspeed Parent Notifications & Portal
Parents/guardians may select to receive automated weekly emails on Sunday summarizing their student’s HCPSS Chromebook internet usage. The email contains:

Once signed up, a Weekly Student Online Activity Report is emailed to the address on record in HCPSS Connect every Sunday. The email has the subject: Filter Portal Weekly Report and is sent from: do_not_reply@lightspeedsystems.com.
The same email contains an option to sign up for the Lightspeed Parent Portal, which provides near real-time information on a student’s HCPSS Chromebook internet activity, and offers the ability to pause web browsing when not on the HCPSS network.

Signing Up for the Lightspeed Parent Portal
While the email notification provides a summary of the student’s HCPSS-issued Chromebook internet activity, the Parent Portal provides additional information and features. To access the Lightspeed Parent Portal, parents/guardians must first sign up to receive the notification using the directions above. At the bottom of the email notification is a Log In or Register link. Parents can use this link to set up their account and access the Lightspeed Parent Portal. During the account set up process, a verification email will be sent to the email address listed on HCPSS Connect.
In the portal, parents can see near real-time information on their student’s HCPSS Chromebook internet activity. Additionally, when not connected to the HCPSS network, parents/guardians can pause their student’s ability to use the web for various amounts of time and block access to YouTube.
Parents/guardians in need of additional assistance should complete the HCPSS Connect Help Form.
Lightspeed Classroom
With the increase in devices available for instruction, teachers have found value in having access to an online classroom management tool.
Lightspeed Classroom is a software application that allows teachers, during specified timeframes, to control how a student uses their HCPSS-issued Chromebook, including viewing student screens, sharing resources, locking devices, reviewing class activity, and restricting some non-instructional sites.
This tool does not replace the teacher instruction and guidance on appropriate and responsible use of technology, but rather assists the teacher in monitoring the application of these concepts during activities in the classroom.
Teachers who wish to use the tool must complete the required Classroom Management professional learning module to ensure compliance with student data privacy policies and access, and learn how to use the application.
For Students
Students are limited to a maximum of 50 browser tabs both during and after school. Using Lightspeed Classroom teachers may further limit the number of tabs students can open during their class sessions.
Using this feature is just one way teachers can help students stay on task. This change will help keep Chromebooks running smoothly, and help to reduce distractions for students.
Students should be mindful of the number of tabs they are using. If the maximum number of tabs is already opened and additional tabs are opened, the oldest tabs open will immediately close. If there is unsaved work on these tabs, it will be lost. This action can’t be undone. Please remember some reasons a new tab may open include clicking on a link set to open in a new tab, teachers sending students a link via Lightspeed Classroom, and other ways.
If a tab limit ever makes it hard for a student to complete their work, they should talk with their teacher, who can help and determine what works best for the class.
