Continuity of Learning – Elementary School

The continuity of learning plan for elementary school students focuses on delivering learning objectives in a variety of ways, leveraging the tools and resources that students and families have available and accounting for the supports they require. It does not seek to replicate the classroom experience as courses and content will not be taught live at a certain time on a particular day. Rather, teachers provide course or grade-specific work that can be completed independently, guide students through a variety of learning experiences, and provide opportunities for students to ask questions and engage with the teacher remotely during scheduled online sessions.

Grading Procedures for Final Grades

A typical week for an elementary school student:

Watch teacher videos and complete associated learning tasks.

Practice online reading and math using Lexia Core5 and Dreambox.

Virtual Check-Ins provide essential connection with teachers & classmates, 15-20 minutes, once or twice a week.

Time will be allotted for interventions, related services, and English language instruction based on student need.

Distance Learning

The HCPSS distance learning model for elementary students will consist of two components: weekly learning tasks and weekly virtual class check-in via Google Meet.

Learning Tasks

Students will engage in 1–2 hours of the following learning activities each day, which will be shared through Canvas each Monday morning:

  • elearning for mathematics via DreamBox
  • elearning for reading via Lexia Core5
  • prerecorded video lessons in writing, mathematics, or social emotional learning
  • content learning tasks in science, social studies, or health
  • related arts learning tasks in art, music, physical education, technology, or library media (K–5)
  • optional enrichment tasks

Virtual Class Check-Ins

Weekly virtual class check-ins will be held for 15–20 minutes via Google Meet. The check-ins will be an opportunity for students to connect with teachers and classmates, to discuss weekly learning tasks, and to ask questions. Students previously receiving additional reading or mathematics support, IEP services, or ESOL services may be invited to additional small group virtual instruction sessions each week.

Reading with Lexia Core5

Students will receive access to Lexia Core5, the reading elearning tool we will use during the school closure. Lexia Core5 is an adaptive, engaging computer-based learning program. The activities in Lexia Core5 support and build on reading standards and focus on developing reading skills in six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Teachers will provide access information to students and families via Canvas. Students should explore Lexia Core5 throughout the week.

Math with Dreambox

Students will have access to DreamBox Learning , the mathematics elearning tool that will be used as a component of our distance learning model. DreamBox Learning is a highly adaptive, individualized learning program that combines an engaging math learning environment with a rigorous, standards-based curriculum. It meets the educational needs of each individual learner, adjusting and re-adjusting in the moment to ensure students have the right level of support and rigor through lessons that promote active learning and independent critical thinking.

Note: Teachers will provide access information to Lexia Core5 and Dreambox to students and families via Canvas. Students are encouraged to utilize the programs throughout the week.
