Keeping Students Healthy & In School

At any given time throughout the school year, students are susceptible to contracting illnesses and needing to remain at home.

Especially in the fall and winter months, common illnesses such as colds, flu, fevers, ear infections; COVID-19; and unpredictable weather, can result in students having to miss school.

While excused, these absences break the routine of daily attendance that contributes to students feeling connected and engaged in learning, and can be detrimental to student achievement as valuable instruction may be missed.

Families are encouraged to consider the following tips to keep students healthy and in school:

  • If your child contracts or you are concerned about COVID or the flu, visit the Howard County Health Department’s (HCHD) website or talk to your child’s medical provider or the school nurse for guidance.
  • If factors beyond physical health are playing a role in your child’s ability to attend school, talk to your child’s teacher, the school nurse, counselor or your medical provider about how best to support your child.
  • Encourage children to wash their hands before and after eating, and after using the restroom.
  • Avoid sharing cups and utensils with other individuals.
  • Encourage healthy habits such as getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, drinking fluids and getting exercise.
  • Dress your children for the cold weather. Outdoor activities during the school day are held unless there are extreme temperatures. If you need assistance with winter clothing, please let your school administrator know. Visit the HCHD website for cold weather safety information.

We recognize there are times students need to be absent due to health issues. If your child needs to stay home for a prolonged period due to illness, please reach out to your child’s teacher(s) for resources students can use at home to continue learning once they feel well enough.
