[ A mother and her son are playing together while he explores a toy kitchen. ]

( Mother ) Can you wash the egg? Now, we’re going to cook the egg and the pizza. Do you like to eat pizza? What else can you find? Let’s look in the fridge.

[ The boy opens the toy refrigerator. ]

( Mother ) Nothing in the fridge. What about the cabinet? What do you see in the cabinet?

[ The boy bypasses the cabinet and begins playing with the buttons on the toy microwave. ]

( Mother ) Oh, the microwave. What can you cook in the microwave? Can the pizza go in the microwave?

[ Note to viewer: You do not need to narrate constantly. ]

( Mother ) Let’s put the pizza in there. Open the door. Open the door. Open.

[ The boy opens the toy microwave and puts the pizza inside. ]

( Mother ) Very good. The pizza’s in the microwave. Oh, what did you find?

[ The boy finds another food toy inside the microwave. He begins to chew on it. ]

( Mother ) A bun. Close the door. - Does that bun taste good?

( Boy ) Uh-huh.

( Mother ) Uh-hmm. Can you put it in the oven?

( Boy ) Uh-huh.

( Mother ) Where’s the oven? That’s the cabinet. You’re going to put it in the cabinet? No? You’re going to eat it? That’s silly. It’s a pretend bun. Let’s put it in the oven.

[ Note to viewer: Children benefit from a balance of quiet play and hearing the parent’s narration. ]

( Mother ) Mommy will open the oven.

[ She opens the oven door. ]

( Mother ) Look. Put it in the oven. I had fun playing with you. You’re good in the kitchen.
