Minimum School Funding

Overview

Minimum School Funding is a part of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future that helps make sure education dollars reach the schools.

It requires school systems to send most of the per-student funding they receive from the State directly to schools. This ensures that money truly follows the student and supports their learning, especially for:

  • Students with disabilities,
  • Multilingual learners,
  • Students in schools with a higher concentration of families living in poverty,
  • Prekindergarten students, and
  • Students who have met College and Career Readiness standards.

While schools benefit from this funding, the budgeting still happens at the school system level, not by individual schools. The new reporting rules also make spending more transparent, so families and communities can see how resources are being used to support students.

In short, Minimum School Funding makes sure that education dollars get where they’re meant to go: into classrooms and student learning.
