Living in Howard County

Howard County Public Schools (HCPSS) are among the many hallmarks of Howard County. HCPSS has longstanding reputation as a top school district in Maryland and an employer of choice for many people in the region.

Situated between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Howard County provides convenient access to some of the world’s best museums, theaters, music and sports venues, restaurants, and much more. Howard County also has a wide range of its own attractions that lead more than 300,000 people to choose it as their home.

Proximity to D.C., Baltimore, and More

Howard County’s location is one of its greatest assets. In an hour or less, you can get to Washington, D.C, Baltimore, Annapolis, and a host of bustling smaller cities. You can also drive from one end of the county to the other in 30 minutes or so, making it small enough to easily commute, but big enough to find a diverse array of communities.

Public Transportation

From Howard County, you have ready access to the region’s three airports (Baltimore-Washington International, Reagan National, and Dulles), bus and rail systems, and interstate highways.

HCPSS partners with Howard County government and the Regional Transportation Agency of Central Maryland to provide free RTA bus access to students, enabling them to get to jobs and other services and destinations throughout the county. 


Entertainment

Howard County is home to several entertainment venues, including Merriweather Post Pavilion, which hosts a variety of artistic and musical events each year.

Retail

Howard County boasts a range of small, independent shops as well as large retail outlets.

Dining

Howard County offers restaurants for all budgets and tastes.

Howard County Library System

In addition to having a vast collection of books and resources, Howard County Library System offers programs and services to support Howard County residents of all ages.

HCPSS partners with HCLS on a variety of initiatives, including the A+ Student Card program, which enables students to take advantage of all the library’s digital and physical resources.

Howard Community College

Howard Community College (HCC) offers an extensive array of affordable courses and programs, enabling students to earn training, degrees, and certificates in a variety of in-demand fields.

HCPSS partners with HCC to offer the JumpStart dual enrollment program, enabling students to earn college credit while in high school.

Healthcare

Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center offers adult and pediatric emergency care, with more than 1000 affiliated doctors in nearly 100 clinical specialties. Howard County is also home to a large number of medical practitioners, spanning a wide range of specialties.
