Dr. Martirano: Greetings. I am Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Michael Martirano, and I am pleased to be joined by your Student Member of the Board of Education, Peter Banyas. We want to share just how important it is for all of us to make the effort to stay healthy this school year.

Peter: As happy as we are to be back at school in-person, it just takes one unsafe social event or one time letting your guard down to result in you having to stay home, not being able to participate in activities at school, and risking the health of your friends and peers.

Dr Martirano: The school system has put in place several practices to keep you safe in school:

  • All staff must be vaccinated or undergo weekly testing.
  • Everyone must wear a mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status.
  • New air filtration units have been installed in every classroom, as well as other safeguards to ensure healthy air.
  • And plenty of hand sanitizer, masks and other PPE are available in your school.

All of this is being done in an effort to keep you healthy and in school.

Peter: But it also takes effort on our part as students. We must be sure to:

  • Perform health checks each morning to be sure we’re not displaying any symptoms of COVID or other illness before coming to school,
  • Wear masks at all times at school unless eating or outdoors,
  • Be safe at all times when socializing outside of school,
  • And those of you who are eligible to be vaccinated should strongly consider doing so.

If you want to learn more about the COVID vaccine, be sure that you and your family consult with your doctor.

Dr. Martirano: Together, we will ensure our school communities remain healthy environments for teaching, learning and growth. Thank you and have a safe and wonderful school year.
