Strategic Priority 2 - Goal 1

← Back to Priority 2

Objective

Reduce student chronic absenteeism rates and minimize disparities across student groups

Measure

Percent students chronically absent (absent 10% or more of days enrolled)

By 2029, HCPSS will reduce the percentage of students chronically absent to the 2019 pre-pandemic level, from 17% to 11% chronically absent.

Equity commitment

Student groups overrepresented in chronic absenteeism will decrease chronic absenteeism at a faster rate in order to narrow gaps, such that no more than 16% of students in each racial/ethnic group and no more than 18% of students eligible for special services are chronically absent.

Why was this measure selected?

Attendance is important to student success across the K-12 years and low attendance can be an early predictor of later academic struggles. Addressing student attendance and chronic absenteeism is a critical step to improving student outcomes.

How were targets set?

Staff referenced chronic absenteeism levels pre-pandemic and set the 2029 target for all students to return to close to the 2019 chronic absenteeism rate. To narrow opportunity gaps, targets for student groups overrepresented in chronic absenteeism were set to reduce at a faster rate.
