HCPSS Staff and Organization Recognized by Superintendent in September 2016

The following staff and community achievements were recently recognized by Superintendent Renee A. Foose.

Staff:

HCPSS pupil personnel worker Tracey L. Williams was awarded the 2016 William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for her work advocating for the equal educational opportunities of homeless and impoverished students. Williams has organized expungement fairs providing second chances for citizens with criminal records and spearheaded partnerships to work with at-risk foster children who are transitioning to independent living.

Amy Connor from Oakland Mills High School and Allison Kipping from Wilde Lake High School are two of only 35 middle and secondary science teachers from across the country to be named academy fellows in the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) New Science Teacher Academy, a yearlong program focused on encouraging and supporting early-career science educators. They will participate in science-related activities and professional learning opportunities.

Talbott Springs Elementary School teacher Eric Bishop received the Maryland Association for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance Simon McNeely Award for outstanding innovation in teaching P.E.

Organization:

The Howard County Public School System Purchasing Department was recognized with the 2016 Annual Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award. This is the second year in a row the school system has won this award.

Northfield Elementary School has been honored with the 2016 Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award for its outstanding efforts in creating an active school environment. The Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award celebrates a school’s commitment to providing students with at least 60 minutes a day of physical activity. Only 544 schools across the country achieved this prestigious honor in 2016.

Maryland State Comptroller Peter Franchot presented Guilford Elementary School with the 2016 Howard County Silver Hammer Award. The Silver Hammer Award is a special recognition for schools that have demonstrated a commitment to fiscal responsibility through superior school maintenance.
