Guilford Elementary School Presented with the 2016 Howard County Silver Hammer Award

September 14th, 2016

On Tuesday, September 13, Howard County Board of Education Chairman Christine E. O’Connor and Howard County Public Schools Superintendent Renee A. Foose welcomed Maryland State Comptroller Peter Franchot to Guilford Elementary School for a tour of the school.

As part of his visit, Franchot presented the school with the 2016 Howard County Silver Hammer Award. The Silver Hammer Award is a special recognition for schools that have demonstrated a commitment to fiscal responsibility through superior school maintenance.

Guilford Elementary School was nominated for the Silver Hammer because it earned superior rating on its last two state inspections even though it was built in 1954. State inspectors praised the facility as being “consistently well-maintained.” The school underwent renovations in 1982 and 2006. Additions were built in 1959, 1982 and 1986. Guilford received $45,000 in State funding for technology infrastructure improvements in 2001.
