Board of Education Considers 2018-2019 Academic Calendar Proposals

November 8th, 2017

The Howard County Board of Education is considering two proposals for the 2018–19 school year. The Academic Planning Committee recommendations are the foundation for each of the proposals, with additional recommendations from the Interim Superintendent.

The two options were presented to the Board on October 3, 2017. A public hearing is scheduled for December 7 and the Board is scheduled to take action on December 19. Members of the community also may submit written testimony in lieu of participating in the December 7 public hearing.

Mandates included in consideration are:

The proposed academic calendars allow for continuity of HCPSS instructional programs, provide teachers with adequate time to engage in professional work and growth activities, reflect our school system’s respect for religious observances, and recognize the need for students, staff, and families to have a traditional break from school work during the spring and winter. Furthermore, the academic calendars adhere to Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR), the HCEA Negotiated Agreement, and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) requirements, as well as Governor Hogan’s 2016 Executive Order.
