Howard County To Host Regional History Day Competition March 14

March 11th, 2015

The Howard County Public School System will host its eleventh annual History Day Competition on Saturday, March 14, 2015, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Reservoir High School, 11550 Scaggsville Road, Fulton. This year’s event, sponsored by the HCPSS Office of Secondary Social Studies, includes 179 project entries presented by 243 students, representing 18 middle and seven high schools. Over 65 teachers and staff, Board of Education members, business partners, and community members will serve as volunteer judges to evaluate student entries.

HCPSS collaborates with libraries, colleges, and local historical institutions to sponsor the county History Day program. Students in Grades 6–12 worked for many months conducting historical research on a self-selected topic that relates to this year’s National History Day theme: Leadership and Legacy in History. Each History Day project was submitted for review at the school level prior to entering the countywide competition.

Students will present entries in five categories: exhibit, performance, multimedia documentary, research paper, and website. First, second, and third place awards will be announced in each category. The top two entries in each category from the Howard County regional contest will advance to the state contest on May 2, 2015, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Event agenda:

Dr. Mark Stout, HCPSS Coordinator for Advanced Programs and Secondary Social Studies, is the district coordinator for Howard County History Day.
