Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Partnership Engages Students through STEM

October 30th, 2014

In a new partnership, the Columbia (MD) Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will partner with Guilford Elementary School to promote advanced STEM skills for students in preparation for higher education and career readiness. The partnership will be formalized with an official signing Saturday, November 1 at Guilford Elementary School, 7335 Oakland Mills Road.

Under the terms of the partnership agreement, the sorority will provide a STEM program as part of the GES Bridges 21st Century Community Learning Center to generate early interest in STEM fields, create exposure to extra-curricular STEM-related projects, and support real world STEM applications for students. The sorority also will provide financial support for students to participate in a local robotics exhibition and to visit the United States Naval Academy. In line with Vision 2018, this partnership provides learning opportunities that span multiple subject areas and supports equitable access to a rigorous instructional program.

Howard County Board of Education Chairman Ellen Flynn Giles, Board Member Sandra French and Guilford Elementary School Principal Genee Varlack will join Columbia (MD) Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority President Vivian Moore Lawyer, 1st Vice President Wanda Nelson, D-STEM Co-Chairs Talitha Darby and Tashia Tillett, and other school system and sorority representatives at the signing.

The Columbia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (www.colmddst.org), chartered in 1971, was the first African-American Greek organization to start a chapter in Howard County, and has grown to be one of the largest Delta chapters in the nation with over 350 chapter members.
