Student Use of Technology and Social Media

September 19th, 2022

The use of technology and social media has become an integrated part of our daily lives and these tools have many benefits related to productivity, connectedness, and communication. While we can embrace technology and social media for many of its positive attributes, the use of certain platforms can present challenges, especially when it comes to children. At HCPSS we have and will continue to remind students of the importance of appropriate use of technology, and ask families to do the same at home.

There are several Board of Education policies listed at the end of this message, as well as the Student Code of Conduct, that set forth the expectations for students and staff using these tools appropriately. Inappropriate language or content, threats, and acts of bullying are just some of the behaviors that will not be tolerated and could result in disciplinary measures.

We also remind our students and families about Grace’s Law, which prohibits anyone from using electronic media to engage in conduct that inflicts serious emotional distress on a minor and/or places that minor in reasonable fear of death or serious bodily injury. A person who is found guilty of violating this law is subject to imprisonment up to a year and a fine of up to $500, or both.

HCPSS has taken a strong position on all acts of discrimination, bullying, and particularly cyberbullying. Instances of bullying of any kind may be made online via the HCPSS bullying reporting form. That form and additional information are available online.

Anyone who sees or is made aware of inappropriate posts and/or threats made on social media, should report them immediately to your school principal and via that platform’s reporting function. If the Principal or other school staff are unavailable, it may also be reported to the Maryland Center for School Safety online or by calling 1-833-MD-B-SAFE (1-833-632-7233).

It takes a team effort to identify and correct these actions in order to protect all of our students, and HCPSS is appreciative of the collaboration with students, families, staff and community members.
