Policy 8000 – Curriculum

The purpose of this policy is to provide a process to manage the curriculum by establishing the structure for curriculum design and implementation and a systematic basis for decision-making and standardized practice.

Policy 8010 – Grading and Reporting: Pre-Kindergarten Through Grade 8

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines to ensure that information on grading, promotion, and retention is determined in a consistent manner and regularly reported to students and their parents.

Policy 8020 – Grading and Reporting: High School

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines to ensure that grading, promotion, and retention is determined in a consistent manner and information is regularly reported to students and their parents.

Policy 8030 – Graduation Requirements

The purpose of this policy is to establish requirements for graduation from high school in the HCPSS that are consistent with the regulations of the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Policy 8040 – Selection of Instructional Materials

The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures for the evaluation, selection, and review of instructional materials for use in Howard County Public Schools.

Policy 8050 – Teaching of Controversial Issues

The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for the teaching of controversial issues.

Policy 8060 – Resource Speakers

The purpose of this policy is to establish a framework for identifying and selecting resource speakers.

Policy 8070 – Religion and Religious Materials

The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines related to the inclusion of religion and religious materials in instruction and during school-related activities.

Policy 8080 – Responsible Use of Technology and Social Media

The purpose of this policy is to define expectations for: the responsible use of technology and social media for HCPSS-sanctioned activities, the responsible use of technology and social media to enhance the education process and improve systemwide communications efforts, maintaining the safety and privacy of individuals.

Policy 8090 – Non-School-Hour Curricular Programs

The purpose of this policy is to establish appropriate guidelines for student participation in curricular activities during non-school hours.

Policy 8100 – Field Trips

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines to plan, approve, and conduct student field trips off school grounds and within the United States.

Policy 8110 – Student International Educational Travel

The Board passed a motion and voted to rescind this policy.

Policy 8120 – Testing: State and Local Responsibilities and Protocols

This policy establishes provisions for how state-mandated, district-selected, and district-designed assessments are approved, secured, administered, and reported in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS).

Policy 8200 – Digital Education

The purpose of this policy is to specify criteria for the HCPSS for digital education courses which will provide students equitable access to instructional resources and utilize technology to individualize learning.
