C‑SPAN Recognizes Long Reach Student With 2018 StudentCam Contest Honorable Mention

May 14th, 2018

Representatives from C-SPAN visited Long Reach High School in Columbia on Wednesday, May 16 to honor Long Reach student Eli Kuperman, named a National Honorable Mention winner in C-SPAN’s national StudentCam competition.

Kuperman received a StudentCam certificate of merit and a $250 prize during a ceremony at the school. Long Reach students and staff watched Kuperman’s winning video, “Remember Your Rights,” during the congratulatory event.

Kuperman’s video discusses the rights of students in schools and the balance between upholding the First Amendment and the orderly operation of an educational environment. It includes interviews with experts from the Howard County Public School System and the John Hopkins University.

For this year’s StudentCam competition, students were asked to create a 5–7 minute video documentary on the topic “The Constitution & You: Choose a provision of the U.S. Constitution and create a video illustrating why it’s important to you.” The winners were chosen from a record 2,985 video submissions from over 5,700 students nationally. Prizes were awarded to 150 students, totaling $100,000 in prize money. All of the 2018 winning videos can be viewed on the StudentCam website.

The C-SPAN Education Foundation sponsors the annual competition. Videos were evaluated by a panel of educators and C-SPAN representatives based on the thoughtful examination of the competition’s theme, quality of expression, inclusion of varying sides of the documentary’s topic, and effective incorporation of C-SPAN programming.
