Timeline for Transitioning to Kindergarten
A timeline for families for the year before kindergarten.
Fall -- September, October, November
- Determine kindergarten eligibility
- Locate the school that serves your neighborhood
- Visit HCPSS website for information
- Become familiar with readiness behaviors
- Get Tips booklet
- Complete some of the Tips activities
- Point out the school to your child
- Play, read, listen and talk with your child
Winter -- December, January, February
- Attend parent conference at your child’s preschool program, if applicable
- Be sure to schedule well-child doctor visit and update immunizations
- Play, read, listen and talk with your child
Spring -- March, April, May
- Review HCPSS website
- Gather required documents for registration
- Determine date and time for your school’s kindergarten registration
- Register your child for kindergarten
- Work together on the “readiness packet” obtained at registration
- Visit the school with your child, play on the playground
- Attend Children’s Discovery Fair at East Columbia Library in April
- Play, read, listen and talk with your child
Summer -- June, July, August
- Visit HCPSS website to determine supply needs or visit local store
- Obtain backpack, lunchbox, school supplies (create excitement and enthusiasm
about school)
- Attend local library’s kindergarten program “Here We Come” (registration
required)
- Attend Open House at school prior to the start of school
- Practice walking to the classroom
- Play, read, listen and talk with your child
