Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for the 2008-2009 school year will begin March 3, 2008. To register for kindergarten, children must be five years old by Sep. 1, 2008. Some rare exceptions for early admittance to school may be made. Parents requesting a one-year waiver to defer entry to kindergarten may obtain a form by calling the Office of Elementary Administration at 410-313-6609.

Every child who is five years old by Sept. 1, 2008, must be enrolled in a kindergarten program this fall.

Register Early

Children should be registered by the custodial parent or guardian at the school they will be attending. (See School Attendance Areas to determine school assignment.) Children should be registered at their school as soon as possible. School staffing is based enrollment numbers and staffing can be adversely affected by late registrations.

Parent/Guardian is required to bring

  • Proof of Age: Birth Certificate
(Lost birth certificate? For children born in Maryland, a copy of the child's birth certificate can be obtained from the Howard County Health Department, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive (off Rt. 175) or call 410-313-6300. There is a charge for the copy.)
  • Verification of Address (two items)

  • Social Security Number (optional)
  • If applicable --- Legal proof of custody (court order)
  • Photo ID of parent

Immunizations

Maryland State immunization regulations require all students to have completed their immunizations in order to attend school. Proof of the completed immunization series must be provided before the first day of school. Required shots include:

  • 4 DTP
  • 3 polio
  • 2 measles
  • 1 mumps
  • 1 rubella

The Maryland Immunization Certificate should be completed with the dates of all vaccines by the health care provider, or the health department; a parent's signature is not permitted. Free immunization is available from the Howard County Health Department.

The only exceptions are:

  • A medical contraindication (exemptions for specific immunizations) signed by a physician.
  • A lost or destroyed record statement signed by a parent. Proof of measles and rubella immunization by a blood test must be presented. Revaccination may be required. For assistance, contact the Howard County Health Department.
