Academic Development
Goal 1 - Students will
acquire the attitudes, knowledge and skills that contribute
to effective learning in school and across their life span.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Develop effective study
and test-taking skills.
2. Develop effective learning habits and time management
skills.
Goal 2 - Students will
employ strategies to achieve success in school.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Develop effective
organization, planning and preparation skills.
2. Use steps in problem solving.
3. Practice schoolwide expectations and policies.
Goal 3 - Students will
understand the relationship of academics to the world of
work, to life at home, and in the community.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Identify the resources
available when making successful transitions.
2. Relate hobbies, interests and strengths to careers in
order to expand awareness of the world of work.
Career Development
Goal 1 - Students will
acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in
relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career
decisions.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Describe careers,
products, and services that are present in the local
community to increase awareness of different types of work
2. Participate in career exploration activities.
Goal 2 - Students will
employ strategies to achieve future career success and
satisfaction.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Show cooperation with
others to accomplish a task in order to value the importance
of work.
2. Identify alternatives when making decisions.
Goal 3 - Students will
understand the relationship between personal qualities,
education and training, and the world of work.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Show how classmates depend
on one another, work together, and share responsibilities.
2. Explain how contributions of individuals are important.
3. Describe the relationship between careers and school
subjects in order to identify factors relating to the ever
changing work place.
Personal/Social Development
Goal 1 - Students will
acquire the attitudes, knowledge and interpersonal skills to
help them understand and respect self and others.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Identify personal
abilities, interests, strengths and areas in need of
development.
2. Recognize, identify and accept feelings of self and
others.
3. Develop skills in resolving conflicts with peers and
adults.
4. Recognize and understand different cultures, attitudes,
and abilities among people.
5. Develop and use effective communication skills.
Goal 2 - Students will
make decisions, set goals and take necessary action to
achieve goals.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Practice citizenship
within the school and community as demonstrated by taking
responsibility for one's own actions.
2. Develop effective decision-making, problem solving and
goal setting processes.
Goal 3 - Students will
understand safety and survival skills.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Practice safe behavior
which promote those values and expectations established by
the Howard County Public School System.
2. Understand the need for coping skills in managing life
events.
3. Utilize school counseling and other services within the
school to obtain assistance when needed.
Grades 6-8
Academic Development
Goal 1 - Students will
acquire the attitudes, knowledge and skills that contribute
to effective learning in school and across their life span.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Participate in cooperation
with parents/guardians and school staff to plan for personal
school success.
2. Identify their interests, personal learning styles,
academic strengths and difficulties in order to succeed in
the learning process.
3. Develop positive organizational, time management, study,
test taking and planning skills to achieve school success.
Goal 2 - Students will
employ strategies to achieve success in school which will
provide them with the opportunity to choose from a wide
range of substantial post-secondary options, including
college.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Evaluate the benefits of
regular attendance and positive behaviors to ensure school
success.
2. Utilize a variety of strategies and resources helpful in
making a successful transition from elementary to middle
school, grade to grade, middle to high school, and between
comprehensive and alternative schools.
3. Practice schoolwide expectations and policies.
Goal 3 - Students will
understand the relationship of academics to the world of
work, to life at home, and in the community.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Explore special programs,
academic options, and extra-curricular opportunities in
order to enhance learning and personal growth.
2. Explain the relationship between academic skills and the
world of work.
Career Development
Goal 1 - Students will
acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in
relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career
decisions.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Locate, evaluate and
interpret career information.
2. Identify effective steps in decision-making and how to
apply them to education, career and life choices.
3. Investigate requirements and options to develop a four
year plan of study for high school.
4. Acquire knowledge about the ever-changing workplace.
Goal 2 - Students will
employ strategies to achieve future career success and
satisfaction.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Apply decision-making
skills to career planning, course selection and career
transitions.
2. Identify personal qualities and behaviors needed to
secure and maintain employment.
3. Use conflict management skills with peers and adults.
Goal 3 - Students will
understand the relationship Between personal qualities,
education and training, and the world of work.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Describe the relationship
between school subjects and careers to assist in educational
and career goal setting.
2. Assess their interests and aptitudes in order to make
effective school and career choices.
3. Identify stereotypes, biases and discriminatory behaviors
that may limit opportunities in the workplace.
Personal/Social Development
Goal 1 - Students will
acquire the attitudes, knowledge and interpersonal skills to
help them understand and respect self and others.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to
1. Express feelings in order
to more accurately
2. understand their feelings and the feelings of others
3. communicate their needs
4. communicate assertively.
5. Develop coping skills in order to adapt to change, make
positive transitions, and effectively handle stress.
Goal 2 - Students will
make decisions, set goals and take necessary action to
achieve goals.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Employ essential social
skills needed to experience positive relationships and work
cooperatively in groups.
2. Develop effective decision-making, problem solving and
goal setting processes.
Goal 3 - Students will
understand safety and survival skills.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Develop alternative ways
to handle conflicts in order to avoid aggressive behaviors.
2. Show respect for physical, academic and cultural
differences among peers and adults in order to learn and
work effectively with others.
3. Access school counseling and other services within the
school to obtain assistance when needed.
4. Practice safe behaviors which promote those values and
expectations established by The Howard County Public School
System.
Grades 9-12
Academic Development
Goal 1 - Students will
acquire the attitudes, knowledge and skills that contribute
to effective learning in school and across their life span.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of
the graduation requirements.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of graduation pathways.
3. Develop time management/organizational skills.
4. Complete an academic resume.
Goal 2 - Students will
employ strategies to achieve success in school which will
provide them with the opportunity to choose from a wide
range of substantial post-secondary options, including
college.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Calculate their Grade
Point Average (G.P.A.).
2. Demonstrate effective study habits and test taking
skills.
3. Enroll in a course of study which matches their
educational goals and objectives.
4. Identify guidance resources and know how to access them
when needed.
5. Recognize that information and support is available from
faculty, staff, and peers.
6. Understand the relationship between school attendance and
school success.
Goal 3 - Students will
understand the relationship of academics to the world of
work, to life at home, and in the community.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Strive to meet and exceed
rigorous academic standards through course selection in
preparation for effective community participation.
2. Access post-secondary resources in preparation for the
world of work.
3. Develop a post-high school plan which may include the
completion of higher education entrance requirements and
financial assistance documents.
4. Seek co-curricular and community activities to enhance
school and life experiences.
Career Development
Goal 1 - Students will
acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in
relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career
decisions.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Develop skills to locate,
evaluate, and interpret career information.
2. Participate in career exploration activities.
3. Develop an individual school-to-career plan, updating
information from previous plans, and including tentative
decisions to be implemented after high school.
Goal 2 - Students will
employ strategies to achieve future career success and
satisfaction.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Present themselves
effectively through resumes, job applications, and
interviews.
2. Complete a career plan appropriate to their current
goals.
Goal 3 - Students will
understand the relationship between personal qualities,
education and training, and the world of work.
Objectives: The students will
demonstrate the ability to:
1. Describe the relationship
between school subjects and careers to assist in educational
and career goal setting.
2. Complete an interest inventory to identify their personal
interests and skills and their career choices.
Personal/Social Development

1. Recognize, accept,
respect, and appreciate individual and cultural differences.
2. Identify extracurricular activities that are available
and understand the criteria necessary to participate.
