Academic Mentors for Elementary School Students
The primary role of the Black Student Achievement Program Elementary Academic Mentor is to provide academic support for students who need extra help in successfully working in the school environment. The Academic Mentor, in consultation with the teachers and administrators, identifies 12 to 15 students to be served on the mentor’s formal caseload.
Services
- Assist students with specific learning behaviors that impact academic achievement. (i.e. taking appropriate risks, persists when thinking through problems, completing class work assignments, etc.)
- Reinforce specific academic skills the student may be attempting to master
- Link students with school, community and tutoring resources
- Communicate regularly with principal and staff to monitor student progress
- Interact with parents in support of students’ achievement
Target Population
As with any BSAP initiative, black students are the Academic Mentor’s primary target population. However, the criteria for referring and selecting students for the Academic Mentor’s formal caseload are based on need, not race. BSAP Academic Mentors may provide services to any student who meets the selection criteria regardless of race or ethnicity. These students are referred to the Academic Mentors by the student’s teachers or by their school administrators.
