Board of Education to Hold Public Work Session on Superintendent’s Proposed FY 2009 Operating Budget
The Howard County Board of Education will hold a public work session on the Superintendent’s Proposed FY 2009 Operating Budget at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, in the Board Room at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108 in Ellicott City.
Individuals who would like to request a sign language interpreter for any meeting of the Board of Education may contact Colleen Rice, Interpreter Scheduler, at 410-313-7046. A two week advanced notice is preferred.

Board of Education to Hold Regular Meeting and Public Hearing on Policy 6000, School Site Selection and Acquisition
The Howard County Board of Education will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, in the Board Room at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108 in Ellicott City.
Both the afternoon and the evening session, which convenes at 7:30 p.m., will begin with a “Public Forum,” when members of the public may address the Board on any topic other than those for which a formal public hearing process exists. Advanced sign up is preferred.
During the evening session, the Board will hold a public hearing on Policy 6000, School Site Selection and Acquisition.
Individuals who wish to testify at the hearing are asked to limit their presentation to three minutes and to provide 15 written copies of their testimony at the time of the hearing. Pre-registration will take place during business hours up to the close of business on the last working day before the hearing.

Talbott Springs Fourth Graders to Visit Harbor Hospital
On Jan. 24, 2008, fourth grade students from Talbott Springs Elementary School will get a frontline view of health care careers and explore healthy lifestyle choices during a visit to Harbor Hospital, a MedStar Health facility at 2990 South Hanover Street in Baltimore. The hospital hosts the entire fourth grade for an annual visit as part of its partnership with the school.
Students will arrive at the hospital at 11 a.m., and will separate into groups to rotate through several 20-minute sessions on topics to include hand washing, safety and first aid, exercise and nutrition, and a “Who Wants to be a Health Hero?” game.
Doctors and other Harbor Hospital staff will present the sessions, which are intended to promote healthy lifestyle habits and introduce the students to careers in the sciences and health care. The students will also enjoy a variety of healthy snacks provided by the hospital.

Time Change for Board of Education Retreat
The time for the previously announced Howard County Board of Education retreat on Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, has been changed to 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Patuxent Room at Faulkner Ridge Center, 10598 Marble Faun Court in Columbia.

Gifted and Talented Education Program to Hold Countywide Student Showcase
The Howard County Public School System’s Gifted and Talented Education Program will present a countywide showcase of students’ creative productions that highlight many of the elementary G/T Program offerings. The event will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, from 7 - 8:30 p.m., at Veterans Elementary School, 4355 Montgomery Road in Ellicott City.
Students will share information about advanced level topics such as oceanography, ancient civilizations, archaeology, creative writing, mathematics, and technology. For example, a group of students from Lisbon Elementary School will use a model to demonstrate many ecological issues facing the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Hammond Elementary School students will demonstrate how they collected and analyzed data to determine the effectiveness of household detergents.

Students Test their Knowledge of African American History at Howard County Black Saga Competition
The third annual Howard County Black Saga Competition will be held on Feb. 2, 2008, at Wilde Lake Middle School, 10481 Cross Fox Lane in Columbia. Black Saga is an academic challenge on African American history that will involve students from participating elementary and middle schools in Howard County. The opening ceremony begins at 9 a.m. and the contest will conclude with an awards ceremony at 11 a.m.
After working to enhance their knowledge of the African American experience for many months, the teams will compete against each other in a contest of their skills. All of these teams will then move forward to the state competition in March, where they will compete against students from other school systems. The Elementary and Secondary Social Studies Offices will host the local event. Program founder, Dr. Charles Christian will bring greetings.
The district coordinator for the Black Saga Competition is Dr. Mark Stout, Curriculum Coordinator for Secondary Social Studies, Howard County Public School System.

Jan. 22, 2008, in the Board Room at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108 in Ellicott City.

Friends of Education Award
Howard County is a community that values education and as a result, many Howard County community members, businesses and organizations donate their time and talents in support of public education. To recognize and show appreciation to those who have made exemplary contributions, the Howard County Board of Education has established the Friends of Education Award. The award was also established to increase awareness of the importance of community involvement to the school system’s ability to achieve its mission.
The award recognizes individuals, businesses, or organizations for innovative or unique contribution that directly supports the school system’s mission of excellence in teaching and learning, supports student achievement, and is significant in scope. Any member of the Howard County community or any group, organization, or business located in or serving Howard County may be nominated for the Friends of Education Award by any Howard County resident or members of a group, organization, association, or business located in or serving Howard County.
Completed nominations should be returned to the Administrative Secretary to the Board of Education at the Howard County Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City, 21042, by Feb. 29, 2008. Nominees and recipients will be notified by March 25 and awards will be presented by the Board of Education on April 24, 2008.
Nomination forms for the Friends of Education Award are available by contacting the Administrative Secretary to the Board of Education at 410-313-7346. Forms are also available on the school system website at www.hcpss.org under “forms.”

Applicants Sought for 2008-2009 Student Member of the Board of Education Position
Students enrolled in Grades 10 and 11 in the Howard County Public School System are invited to apply for the 2008-2009 Student Member of the Board of Education position. The deadline for applying is Friday, Feb. 15, 2008.
Applicants are required to meet the school system's academic eligibility requirements and must participate in a countywide election organized by the Howard County Association of Student Councils. All interested students should see their school principal or contact Mr. Roger Plunkett at 410-313-6610.

School System to Hold Special Education Job Fair
The Howard County Public School System will hold a Special Education Job Fair on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, from 3 - 7 p.m. at Harpers’s Choice Middle School, 5450 Beaverkill Road in Columbia. The snow date will be Jan. 31.

Destination Organized to Seek Support for Patapsco Middle School and Help Students “Get Organized”
Patapsco Middle School students, teachers, and staff will learn effective organizing skills, and will gain invaluable assistance in seeking support for the school from local businesses, through a new partnership with Destination Organized. The partnership will be formalized with an official signing at the school on Jan. 15, 2008.
Under the terms of the partnership agreement, Destination Organized will seek support from local businesses for school events, activities, and fundraising efforts. The company will also provide tips on getting organized to empower and enrich the lives of busy students, families and school staff.
At 2 p.m., Valerie L. Walker, President, Destination Organized will join Sandra H. French, Howard County Board of Education Member, Jennifer Peduzzi, Principal, and Nancy Eisenhuth, Assistant Principal, Patapsco Middle School, and Mary Schiller, Manager of the Partnerships Office to sign the formal partnership agreement.
