(#2005-70)Board of Education Meeting
The Howard County Board of Education will hold a regularly
scheduled meeting on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006 at 4 p.m. in the
Board Room at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108 in
Ellicott City.
Both the afternoon and the evening session, which begins at
7:30 p.m., will begin with a “Public Forum,” when members of the
public may address the Board on any topic other than those for
which a formal public hearing process exists. Advanced sign up
is preferred. Contact the Executive Assistant to the Board to
sign up.

Individuals who would like to request a sign language
interpreter for any meeting of the Board of Education may

on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in the Board Room at the Department
of Education, 10910 Route 108 in Ellicott City.

(#2005-68)HCPSS Partners with Girl Scouts
The Howard County Public School
System is partnering with the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland (GSCM)
in a collaborative effort to involve students, staff and parents
in learning about nature, wildlife and the environment. The
partnership will give students, staff, and parents the
opportunity to explore the outdoors and participate in
environmental programs that support academic goals and
objectives.
Howard County students will
learn about nature, wildlife and the environment through the use
of GSCM’s Camp Ilchester, located in Elkridge. The property
includes the Clementine Peterson Activity Center and Middendorf
Nature Trail, plus a year-round lodge, amphitheater, and day and
primitive camping sites. The Clementine Peterson Activity Center
is available to HCPSS for meetings and instruction.
The partnership agreement was
announced on Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at Camp Ilchester’s
Clementine Peterson Activity Center. Signing the agreement at
the meeting for the GSCM were Chief Executive Officer Traci
Barnett and Senior Vice President Patricia Dash. Business,
Community, and Government Relations Officer Roger Plunkett and
School/Business Partnerships Manager Mary Schiller represented
the school system. Also in attendance were Mary Ann McClurg,
GSCM President, area scout leaders and principals from numerous
HCPSS schools.

(#2005-67)Citizen’s Advisory Committee Meeting Canceled
The meeting of the Citizen’s
Advisory Committee to the Board of Education of Howard County
scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, has been canceled. The
committee’s next meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006.

(#2005-66)PSAT Regional Parent Information Nights to be Held
The Office of School Counseling
will hold PSAT parent information sessions at regional high
school sites next month. Dr. Martha Gagnon, formerly with the
College Board and currently a college educational consultant,
will be the workshop presenter.
All parents of high school
sophomores and juniors are encouraged to select an evening that
is most convenient to attend. The purpose of the presentation is
to help parents better understand their student’s PSAT scores
and to support them in planning college test taking strategies.

The Howard County Public School System will host a delegation
of educators from China on Dec. 8, 2005. The purpose of the
visit is to set up a sister schools partnership with Long Reach
High School.
The four members of the delegation include:
