HCPSS Partners with Girl Scouts

The Howard County Public School System is partnering with the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland (GSCM) in a collaborative effort to involve students, staff and parents in learning about nature, wildlife and the environment. The partnership will give students, staff, and parents the opportunity to explore the outdoors and participate in environmental programs that support academic goals and objectives.

Howard County students will learn about nature, wildlife and the environment through the use of GSCM’s Camp Ilchester, located in Elkridge. The property includes the Clementine Peterson Activity Center and Middendorf Nature Trail, plus a year-round lodge, amphitheater, and day and primitive camping sites. The Clementine Peterson Activity Center is available to HCPSS for meetings and instruction.

The partnership agreement was announced on Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at Camp Ilchester’s Clementine Peterson Activity Center. Signing the agreement at the meeting for the GSCM were Chief Executive Officer Traci Barnett and Senior Vice President Patricia Dash. Business, Community, and Government Relations Officer Roger Plunkett and School/Business Partnerships Manager Mary Schiller represented the school system. Also in attendance were Mary Ann McClurg, GSCM President, area scout leaders and principals from numerous HCPSS schools.
