Howard County Local Children’s Board Partnership Targets Student Well-Being

The Howard County Public School System has partnered with the Howard County Local Children’s Board (LCB) to provide students with opportunities and resources necessary to succeed. The partnership was formalized with an official partnership signing on Friday, June 13 at Oakland Mills Middle School.

Under the terms of the agreement, the LCB and HCPSS will coordinate supports to improve outcomes for students needing mental health services, food assistance, shelter and in other areas. The LCB will support students through a variety of programs, including Building Youth Resiliency, the Jacaranda Center for Family and Youth Development workshops, Weekend Warrior Snack Packs and Roving Radish. These programs address student well-being by providing case management assistance to students with incarcerated parents, leading youth empowerment programs, providing access to healthy snacks over the weekend and nutritional meal kits for families. In addition, the LCB is providing targeted supports to the Oakland Mills Middle School community by making the school library available for students over the summer and providing a Summer Math Acceleration Camp, which has served 66 students in 2018. 


The LCB will collaborate with the HCPSS Department of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to build community through Youth in Conversation, a #OneHoward initiative where high school students have conversations about race, culture, religion and gender. The LCB will also lead the Voices for Change coalition, a diverse group of youth and adults working to empower young people to take action and create positive change in Howard County.

HCPSS Superintendent Michael J. Martirano; Chief Communication, Community and Workforce Engagement Officer Jahantab Siddiqui; Executive Director of Community, Parent and School Outreach James LeMon and Oakland Mills Middle School Principal Megan Chrobak joined Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman, Department of Community Resources and Services Director Jacqueline Scott and Howard County Local Children’s Board Administrator Kimberly Eisenreich to sign the formal partnership agreement at the July 13 event.

The Howard County Local Children’s Board comprises public and private members working collaboratively to ensure a strong continuum of services for families and children in the community. The Board works in partnership with the Governor’s Office for Children to ensure children grow up healthy, secure and successful.

The Howard County Public School System’s Partnerships Office has united schools with more than 1,000 businesses and community organizations to enhance the educational experience of Howard County students. Partnerships benefit schools, businesses and the entire community by leveraging the resources of all participants. Partners may commit human or financial resources or other support.
