Guilford Elementary Earns Green Flag Award for Environmental Achievement

July 9th, 2018

The National Wildlife Federation Eco-Schools USA program has awarded Guilford Elementary School its highest honor, the Green Flag, for the school’s exceptional achievement in maintaining “green” building and grounds practices, conserving natural resources, and integrating environmental education into the curriculum. Guilford Elementary is the sixth school in Maryland and the 108th nationally to receive the award.

To earn the Green Flag, Guilford students and staff implemented a variety of sustainability initiatives including an audit of its energy efficiency, waste disposal and other environmental impact areas, and the incorporation of environmental themes into classroom activities and materials. Other activities included development of a certified Monarch Way Station and several other projects designed to improve school grounds, raise environmental awareness and reduce waste.
