Howard County Students Excel at 2018 National History Day

Two Howard County students won awards at the 2018 National History Day Competition held at the University of Maryland in College Park on June 14. The winning students competed against hundreds of students from school systems across the country.

Jake Blum of Howard High School won the Senior Individual Documentary category with “On the Front Lines of Faith: Chaplains’ Reconciliation of Conflicting Roles in the Vietnam War.”

The U.S. Constitution Award, sponsored by the National Archives and Records Administration, was given to Anjali Vidyasagar of Mayfield Woods Middle School for “The Nullification Crisis: A Precursor to the Civil War” in the Junior Individual Exhibit category.

The competition was the culmination of wins at the Howard County Regional History Day Competition and the Maryland State History Day Competition held earlier this year. After placing first or second at the statewide Maryland History Day competition in May, 14 HCPSS students were eligible to participate in the national competition. Students presented entries in five categories: exhibit, performance, multimedia documentary, research paper and website.
