HCPSS Student and Staff Achievements Recognized in June 2018

Interim Superintendent Michael J. Martirano recently recognized the following student and staff achievements.

Howard County had the most winners in the Maryland Society for Educational Technology awards, which recognize efforts to integrate technology with instruction. HCPSS students won in 10 of the 14 categories, representing areas such as graphic arts, desktop publishing, and student created games or apps. Mount View Middle School teacher Kirsten Willging also won an educator grant for her vision to redesign a darkroom into a MakerSpace.

The HCPSS Crisis Intervention Team is a group of 50 psychologists, counselors, pupil personnel workers, and nurses who volunteer to go above and beyond in responding to districtwide incidents. By helping 96 school teams for 66 crisis events this year, the crisis team provided far more support than ever before. In comparison, during the previous five-year period, the team supported an average of 76 school teams per year.

A group of 22 elementary school teachers completed a two-year HCPSS professional learning experience in guided reading instruction and literacy leadership. The teachers began their journey in the 2016-17 school year with professional learning sessions and coaching support. This school year, the participants further honed their leadership skills by attending bi-monthly professional learning sessions, serving as model classrooms for HCPSS elementary literacy teachers, and presenting at the school, county and state level.
