Howard County Lego Team Recognized at 2018 FIRST World Championship

Six Folly Quarter Middle School seventh-graders won a Judges’ Award at the FIRST World Championships, recently held in Detroit. Students Nik Anna, Joshua Hull, B.J. King, Alex Patrone, Otto Schlanger and Benjamin Yu received the award for their exceptional teamwork.

The student team, the Water BuffaLEGOs, finished as the second champion team at the Maryland State Championships, held at the University of Maryland Baltimore County in February.

The Water BuffaLEGOs traveled to Detroit to represent Maryland and participate in the competition with 104 of the best FIRST Lego League teams from all over the world. The event had over 40,000 attendees from all levels of the FIRST program. The Water BuffaLEGOs were one of only a few teams to receive a Judges Award for their project that is focused on helping firefighters do their job more effectively.

FIRST Lego League introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges by inviting them to conduct research projects and build LEGO-based autonomous robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FIRST LEGO League teams, guided by their imaginations, discover exciting career possibilities and learn to make positive contributions to society.
