HCPSS Welcomes State Superintendent to Three Schools, May 10, 2018

Maryland State Superintendent Karen Salmon visited Talbott Springs and Cradlerock elementary schools and the Homewood Center on May 10.

At Talbott Springs Elementary School, Dr. Salmon recognized HCPSS Food and Nutrition Services Director Brian Ralph for his commitment to student well-being and innovations made to the school system’s Food and Nutrition program, including fruit and vegetable bars in school cafeterias, the addition of tasty, nutritious new options to school breakfasts and lunches, and expansion of the school breakfast and summer meal programs.

Salmon toured Cradlerock Elementary School and visited the full-day Pre-K classes that are part of the Maryland State Department of Education grant funded expansion. Salmon read to the Pre-K class and visited the school’s Judy Center, where she presented a proclamation to center staff on behalf of Governor Hogan. Judith P. Hoyer Early Child Care and Family Education Centers, known as “Judy Centers,” provide services to children age birth through Kindergarten and their low-income families.

During Salmon’s visit to the Homewood Center, she presented a citation on behalf of Governor Hogan recognizing excellence in serving the HCPSS special education community. The citation recognized Transition Teacher Stephanie Wallace for her work establishing the Work Experience–Students to Employment Program (WE STEP). The program assists students in developing appropriate and positive work behaviors, and provides opportunities for students to receive on-the-job training.
