Interim Superintendent, Board of Education Members and Elected Officials to Visit HCPSS Schools on First Day of School Tour

September 1st, 2017

Interim Superintendent Michael J. Martirano will be joined by Board of Education (BOE) Chairman Cindy Vaillancourt and Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman for a tour of several schools on Tuesday, September 5, the first day of the 2017–2018 school year for the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS). Additional teams of state and county officials, Board members and HCPSS leaders will also tour schools, with all 76 schools scheduled to receive a visit on the first day.

During the first week of school, teachers and students at all schools will engage in activities to foster a sense of community in the classroom. These include lessons that emphasize each individual’s contribution to the classroom, norms for respectful, trusting and safe interactions, and the meaning and value of equity and how it looks and feels in our community.

The total projected HCPSS enrollment for this academic year is expected to exceed 56,600 students, an increase of approximately 1,000 students over last year. The system hired 313 new teachers this summer to accommodate the enrollment growth in the county’s 76 schools.
