Attendance Area Committee Offers Alternative Recommendation

September 27th, 2017

The Howard County Public School System Attendance Area Committee (AAC) presented an alternative recommendation to Interim Superintendent Michael J. Martirano on September 27, 2017. The alternative plan incorporates changes related to a recent proposal to accelerate the opening of a new high school by two years, as well as considerations for an alternative location.

Dr. Martirano asked the AAC during his September 11 capital budget presentation to reconvene to consider modifications to its original recommendation related to the 13th high school.  The new school is now targeted for a 2022 completion in the northeast region of the county, with possible locations at Rockburn Park or Mission Road.

The public may continue to provide feedback to the Interim Superintendent on attendance area adjustments by completing an online survey (now closed) through September 28, 2017.

Dr. Martirano will present his recommendation to the Board of Education at its October 3, 2017 meeting. The public may provide feedback to the Board at Public Hearings on October 26 and November 7, or via email to boe@hcpss.org after October 3.
