HCPSS Invites Howard County Citizens to Attend Regional Attendance Area Open House, September 12-13

Community members are invited to attend an open house on the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) Regional Attendance Area process. The walk-in sessions will be held at two regional locations on September 12 and 13, 2017, where participants may learn about the attendance area adjustment process, ask questions, and provide feedback to inform the Superintendent’s recommendation to the Board of Education.

Attendance area adjustments are planned to open New Elementary School #42 at 7030 Banbury Drive in Hanover, which is scheduled for completion in Fall 2018. Boundary adjustments are also under consideration to relieve overcrowding at multiple elementary, middle and high schools. The Board of Education is scheduled to take action in November 2017 on school boundary changes, which would go into effect in August 2018.

The open houses will be held:

Tuesday, September 12, 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Wilde Lake High School Cafeteria
5460 Trumpeter Road, Columbia, Maryland 21044

Wednesday, September 13, 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Howard High School Cafeteria
8700 Old Annapolis Road, Ellicott City, Maryland 21043

Both sessions will offer the same information and format. Residents may arrive at any time between 7:30 – 9 p.m. to visit walk-up stations where HCPSS staff will provide information and answer questions about Policy 6010, School Attendance Areas; the attendance area adjustment process and schedule; and the Attendance Area Committee’s recommendation to the Superintendent. Computer stations will also be available to provide feedback.

Reservations are recommended by completing this form. Individuals may request a sign language interpreter for any community forum by contacting Colleen Markiewicz, interpreter scheduler, at 410-313-7046. A two-week advance notice is preferred.

Community members are invited to submit feedback on the original plan proposed in the 2017 Feasibility Study and/or on the Attendance Area Committee (AAC) recommendation. To submit feedback:

• Complete an online Feedback Survey by September 22, 2017.
• Submit feedback at the computer stations at either Open House.
• Testify at a Board of Education Public Hearing on Thursday, October 26, at 7 p.m. or Tuesday, November 7, at 7 p.m. No testimony will be taken at the Open Houses.
