Get Ready for the 2017-2018 School Year!

Posted: August 16th, 2017

We’re closing in on the end of summer! Here’s what you need to know for the 2017-2018 school year.

Before Day One!

School Calendar and Student/Parent Handbook

All families will receive one hard copy of the 2017-2018 HCPSS calendar at the start of the school year. Print-friendly and online calendars are available on our website, and will reflect the most up-to-day information. Users may also subscribe to the HCPSS calendar and add it to the service of your choosing.

Families also will receive a paper copy of the 2017-2018 Student and Parent Handbook, which also is available online.

Registration

All incoming kindergarteners, new students, transfers, etc., must be registered prior to the first day of school. Enrollment requirements can be found online. Please contact your child’s school for registration dates and times.

Emergency Card Procedures with Family File

HCPSS utilizes Family File for parents/guardians to complete emergency information. Parents/guardians must verify and/or update information for each child, and can do so by logging in to HCPSS Connect and selecting the Family File tab and then clicking on Family File. Login instructions for both new and existing parents are available online.

Bus Schedules

We are excited to have a new online school & bus locator that features an efficient, mobile friendly and informative format. The new locator offers an enhanced map, pop-up messaging, same day updating capability, and additional school information. Type in your address to see your child’s school and bus schedule. For the first week of school, parents are asked to ensure students arrive at bus stops earlier than the usual five minutes.

School Supplies

Each school provides its own school supply list, posted on the HCPSS website for your convenience. Elementary and middle schools have supply lists by grades. High school students will be given supply lists by their teachers at the start of the year. Please contact your child’s school with any questions.

Back to School Nights

The back to school night schedule for all HCPSS schools is available online. Last-minute changes may not be reflected online so please double check dates and times with your child’s school.

School Meals

Our Food and Nutrition Services web page has a great deal of information parents/guardians may find helpful, including meal prices, how to pay for meals, where to view menus, nutritional and allergen information, and more.

Parents of students who qualify for Free and Reduced Meals must submit a new application every school year. Details on the HCPSS FARMs program is online, including how to apply.

Student Driving and Parking on School Grounds

All students drivers and a parent or guardian must attend a safe driving program in order for the student to get a parking permit. Students may attend a presentation at any location. A full list of events is on our website.

Staying In Touch

HCPSS News

HCPSS News email messages and text alerts keep parents/guardians, community members and employees up to date on news and events, and delivers real-time notices of bus schedule changes, weather-related closings and emergency information. Parents/guardians of previously enrolled HCPSS students do not need to sign up for, or manage an HCPSS News account. All HCPSS News subscriptions are based on your Family File information. Find more information online.

HCPSS Mobile Application

Our HCPSS mobile application delivers HCPSS news, upcoming events, school menus, documents and minutes from Board of Education meetings, and direct connections to all system social media resources. The free HCPSS app is available on iTunes and Google Play.

Emergency Notifications

A list of HCPSS emergency notification sources can be found on our website.

Social Media Accounts

HCPSS has active accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more. Find a full list of our social media sites on our website. Additionally, many of our schools use social media to communicate to their communities. Visit your school’s website for those links.

Additional Information

Visiting Schools

All school or office building visitors must bring a driver’s license and sign in with our LobbyGuard visitor management system. Details on that are explained in Interim Superintendent Michael Martirano’s blog.

Parent Volunteer Procedures

HCPSS values our volunteers and the contributions they make to our students and schools. Parents who wish to volunteer must complete a brief training course online and submit a certificate of completion to their school. Details are available on our website.

HCPSS Connect

Stay looped into your student’s academics through HCPSS Connect, where you can keep up-to-date with your child’s classroom by monitoring homework assignments, checking schedules and attendance records, viewing report cards and more. Login instructions for new and existing parents are available online.

Naviance for High School Parents

Naviance has a new feature called Active Match that allows students to communicate with college admissions offices. Active Match is a voluntary feature that students can select to use. As a parent/guardian, you can limit your student’s ability to use this feature by checking one of the college related privacy boxes in the the FERPA section of the Family File. If you have not yet accessed Naviance or have any questions about this new feature, please contact your student’s school counselor.

Getting to School Safely

Please review with your child safe practices for walking, biking or riding the bus to school. Resources on student safety and motorist safety can be found online.
