24 Math Challenge Tournament, March 24

March 22nd, 2017

Friday, March 24,  7–8:30 p.m., Hollifield Station Elementary School, 8701 Stonehouse Drive, Ellicott City

Students from nine elementary schools will participate in the first Howard County Public School System 24 Math Challenge Tournament. Approximately 36 students in Grades 4 and 5, representing the top winners from each of the participating schools, will compete. The tournament will be held at Hollifield Station Elementary in Ellicott City on Friday, March 24, from 7–8:30 p.m.

The 24 game is a unique mathematics teaching tool that engages students in using mental math computational skills. Students compete to be the first to solve a 24 challenge, which involves using multiplication, division, addition and/or subtraction to make the four numbers on a 24 game card equal 24. Students throughout Howard County are exposed to this engaging, fast-paced math game, using versions ranging from simple addition and subtraction to algebraic variables.

Bellows Spring, Deep Run, Guilford, Hammond, Hollifield Station, Manor Woods, Stevens Forest, Swansfield and Thunder Hill elementary schools ran their own in-school 24 competitions to determine winners to send on to the tournament. The tournament will consist of two preliminary rounds followed by semi-final and final rounds. One winner will be awarded the tournament trophy and runners-up will receive gold, silver and bronze medals.
