HCPSS Staff and Students Recognized by Superintendent, December

December 15th, 2016

Superintendent Renee A. Foose recently recognized the following students and staff achievements.

Staff:

Lime Kiln Middle School science teacher Michelle Clark was awarded the Maryland Association of Science Teachers Award for Excellence. The association also recognized Oakland Mills High School science teacher Janice Doherty as an Outstanding Science Teacher. The Maryland Association of Science Teachers annual award program recognizes excellence in science teaching, administration and outreach in Maryland.

Stevens Forest Elementary School math teacher Grace Derenberger was named a 2016 Outstanding Mathematics Educator in the Pre-K–2 teacher category by the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Ellicott Mills Middle School Principal Christopher Rattay received the 2016 Alvin and Louise Meyerberg Arts Leadership Award from the Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance. The award recognizes principals from Maryland public school systems for excellent arts education leadership and for providing a creative learning environment for outstanding student achievement.

The Howard County Association of Counseling and Development named Waverly Elementary School Guidance Counselor Rachael Allison and River Hill High School Guidance Counselor Phil Vangeli as HCPSS Counselors of the Year. Allison and Vangeli will now be considered for state-level honors by the Maryland School Counselor Association.

Students:

Marriotts Ridge High School student Yoshihiro Saito  was named a 2016 Regional Finalist in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology, the nation’s premier research competition for high school students. Saito is one of only 96 regional finalists to be invited to advance to the next round of the competition where he will vie for college scholarships ranging from $1,000 up to $100,000, and one of the most prestigious science honors awarded to high school students in the country today.

River Hill High School student Jennifer Zheng was awarded the Governor’s Service Award in the youth category for her work raising cancer awareness. The Governor’s Service Awards are presented each year by the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism. These awards recognize Maryland citizens for their significant volunteer contributions to the state and its people, and for working to change Maryland for the better.

Centennial High School students Christopher Cha and Radhika Gholap, Glenelg High School student Martin Wang, and River Hill High School students Pavan Ravinda and Benjamin Xu recently received perfect composite scores on the ACT college readiness assessment. Just one-tenth of one percent of students who took the test achieved a perfect score.

Dunloggin Middle School student Alyssa Mathew was featured in the Washington Post for her work to bring back the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay. Mathew and about 70 of her Dunloggin classmates are growing more than 9,000 oysters on Kent Island, where the oysters are growing in cages alongside a dock.
