HCPSS Students, Staff and Schools Recognized in October By Superintendent

Superintendent Renee A. Foose recently recognized the following students, staff and school achievements.

Students:
Wilde Lake High School senior Andrea D’Souza became an official volunteer Emergency Medical Technician or an EMT after taking classes for three months and passing a national exam.

Marriotts Ridge High School student Wendy Yang was named a Maryland Foreign Language Association visual arts contest winner. Her artwork was featured on the cover of the 2016 MLFA Fall Conference program.

Fifth-grader Maya Fuller from Hammond Elementary School was selected from over 1, 250 entries as one of five winners of the Howard County Library bookmark contest. The contest is open to all students in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade who live or attend school in Howard County. Bookmarks judged on originality, design and reproducibility. Copies of the winning bookmarks are available at all branch locations while supplies last.

Staff:
Lime Kiln Middle School teacher Seth Waltman has published a new book, “Super Mom and Dad: Military Heroes!” The book helps parents and caregivers explain to young children about military deployment and how to cope when parents are deployed.

Eighteen Howard County public school teachers and staff were recognized for receiving Bright Minds 2016–2017 Staff and Teacher grants for innovative instructional projects. The grants, totaling nearly $25,000, were awarded by Bright Minds Foundation, the county’s independent, nonprofit organization that enhances educational opportunities for public school students through support for equity, innovation and lifelong learning.

Glenwood Middle School Principal Robert Motley joined National Association for Secondary School Principals President Jayne Ellspermann and Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti for a presentation on Capitol Hill for National Principal’s Month. Motley represents Region II on the NASSP board.

HCPSS Mathematics Instructional Support Teacher Robin White was a panelist for an Alliance for Excellent Education webinar. The webinar, “Ten Questions for Mathematics Teachers…And How PISA Can Help Answer Them,” addressed questions and strategies that can expose students to deeper learning, through which they can make connections among different mathematical tasks, link their learning to prior knowledge, control their own learning, and identify associations with real-life situations.

Schools:
Stevens Forest Elementary School and its PTA have been recognized as a National PTA School of Excellence for the second consecutive two-year period for their achievement in building effective family-school partnerships. The School of Excellence award recognizes the strong partnerships between schools and PTAs to support student success and continuous school improvement through initiatives such as Parent Champion, International Night and other programs that actively engage families in the school. Stevens Forest was the only Maryland School to earn this distinction during the 2014–2016 cycle, and remains the only school in Howard County and one of four across Maryland to earn the distinction in 2016–2018.
