Howard County Students Become Farm Hands for a Day

September 8th, 2016

Four students from Harper’s Choice Middle School in Columbia became farm hands for a day at Hensing’s Hilltop Acres Farm in Dayton on Tuesday, September 13. The visit was an annual highlight of the Farm-City Celebration, a series of fall events that promote understanding and appreciation between urban citizens and agriculture in Howard County.

Students started by touring the farm and learning its history. After an overview of safe and healthy animal care requirements including feeding and watering, living environment, and examination for illness and injury, the students took an active part in daily farm activities by feeding and watering calves, milking cows, making butter, and cleaning pens and stalls. In the process, they learned how to responsibly and safely care for farm animals.

On Tuesday, September 20, the students shared highlights of their day on the farm with guests at the annual Farm-City Job Exchange Luncheon at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Glenwood.

The Howard County Farm-City Celebration is 15 days of fun for families, learning experiences for children, and an opportunity to appreciate the contributions local farms make to the quality of life for Howard County residents.

The Howard County Public School System’s Partnerships Office unites businesses and community organizations with schools to enhance the educational experience.
