Sixth Graders Explore the Intersection of History and Science during Great Belmont Adventure

May 17th, 2016

Sixth graders at Thomas Viaduct, Patapsco, and Elkridge Landing middle schools will explore the history and science of Howard County during the Great Belmont Adventure, which takes place May 23 and 25, and June 1-2 on the grounds of the Belmont Manor and Historic Park in Elkridge, Maryland.

The project culminates a year-long study of erosion in Grade 6 science classes.

“The Great Belmont Adventure brings classroom learning full circle, as students discover firsthand the impact of erosion throughout history.” said Renee A. Foose, Superintendent of the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS). “The project is the result of our strong partnership with Howard County Conservancy, which greatly enriches our science curriculum.”

Students will discover first-hand the causes and impact of erosion, both on the environment and on human conditions throughout history, through several activities at locations throughout the Belmont site. They will use a handheld GPS to navigate the site for a geocaching project; model the land and river using natural materials for a stormwater engineering project; explore historical grave markers for insights on history and geology of the area; and learn about period photography and the historical dress and customs of the Dorsey family and others during the colonial era.

“This project is an excellent example of the interdisciplinary, experience-based learning that is embedded throughout our science curriculum” said Mary Weller, HCPSS Coordinator of Secondary Science. “Students become immersed in science, and engaged in the learning process, by following the practices of real scientists in the field.”
