HCPSS Students Named 2016 Carson Scholars

April 22nd, 2016

The Mid-Atlantic Carson Scholars were recognized at the annual awards ceremony on April 10 at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland. Each year, the Carson Scholars Fund recognizes a select group of high-achieving students in Grades 4–11 who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and humanitarianism. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Carson Scholars Fund. Pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson gave the keynote speech at the ceremony.

Twelve HCPSS students were named first-time Carson Scholars, and 19 students who renewed their Carson Scholar status were recognized as Recognized Carson Scholars. To renew their status, student must maintain high academic standards and a strong commitment to their communities. Carson Scholars receive a $1,000 college scholarship award, an Olympic-sized medal and a trophy for their school.

This year’s awards represent the largest grant of new scholarships and the largest group of recognized scholars in the history of the Carson Scholars Fund. The fund has grown from 25 scholars to a scholar network of over 7,300.

The Carson Scholars Fund Inc. was founded in 1994 by Dr. Benjamin Carson and his wife, Candy. Carson Scholars must have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities through community service. Scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of academic achievement and humanitarian qualities, without regard to financial need, ethnicity, creed or religion.
