February 10th, 2016

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra invited the 106 student members of the Howard County High School Gifted and Talented Orchestra to perform with them in a side-by-side concert.

The concert was held Wednesday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Meyerhoff. The concert featured works by Borodin, Beethoven, Wagner and Rimsky-Korsakov.

Student soloist Nicholas Kim, winner of the Howard County Concerto Competition, performed the first movement from Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No.2.

Maryland Lieutenant Governor Boyd Rutherford and Superintendent Renee A. Foose offered brief remarks before the performance.

Members of the High School Gifted and Talented Orchestra, who are selected through a competitive audition process, prepared for the concert through preparatory rehearsals and master classes with Maestro Nicolas Hersh and BSO musicians.

The student musicians joined their BSO counterparts and Maestro Hersh for the first time at a rehearsal on Feb. 4 in preparation for this performance.
