Delta Scholars Program Provides Mentorships for HCPSS Students

The Howard County Public School System partnered with the Columbia (MD) Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. to provide mentoring and community service opportunities for students. This longstanding partnership was updated with an official signing Wednesday, December 16 at the Sheraton Columbia Waterside Restaurant, 10207 Wincopin Circle.

Under the terms of the partnership agreement, the sorority will collaborate with the HCPSS Office of Community Outreach and Engagement to implement its Delta Scholars Program, which provides mentoring and community service opportunities for high school females. The sorority also will offer scholarships for African-American seniors and will conduct a STEM program for students at Guilford Elementary School. This partnership supports Vision 2018 strategies to engage students in the learning process and provide authentic learning experiences to solve real-world problems.

Howard County Board of Education Vice Chairman Ellen Flynn Giles and HCPSS Director Community Outreach and Engagement Diane Martin joined Columbia (MD) Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. President Vivian Lawyer and signed the formal partnership agreement at the December 16 event.

The Columbia (MD) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (www.colmddst.org), chartered in 1971, was the first African-American Greek organization to start a chapter in Howard County, and has grown to be one of the largest Delta chapters in the nation with over 350 chapter members.

The Howard County Public School System’s Partnerships Office unites businesses and community organizations with schools to enhance the educational experience.
