Howard County’s Stephanie Geddie Selected as Maryland Teacher of the Year Finalist

September 2nd, 2015

Laurel Woods Elementary School teacher Stephanie Geddie this morning was named one of seven finalists for the Maryland State Department of Education 2015-2016 Teacher of the Year. The state winner will be announced at an awards gala Oct. 9.

Geddie, who this spring was named the Howard County Public School System Teacher of the Year, is the Kindergarten Instructional Team Leader at Laurel Woods, where she facilitates the Classroom-Focused Improvement Process and takes an active role in school improvement. She is also co-founder of Building Blocks Network, a parent outreach program, and has served as a teacher mentor to UMBC student interns. Her other honors include the 2015 Washington Post’s Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher for Howard County, HCPSS Special Education Advisory Committee award, and Baltimore Ravens’ 2014 Teacher of the Year nominee.

“Stephanie has built meaningful relationships with her students, their families and the local community, encouraging them to become active stakeholders in students’ success,” HCPSS Superintendent Renee A. Foose said. “She is well-deserving of this honor and represents all of Howard County to the highest degree.”

Howard County teacher Jody Zepp was named the 2014-2015 Maryland Teacher of the Year. She has spent the last year traveling the state as a speaker and advisor on education issues to policy makers.
