August 25th, 2015

Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) joined the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) to support a troubled Baltimore City school. The initiative is part of Governor Larry Hogan’s Maryland Unites Day of Service campaign.

Following the unrest in Baltimore in late spring, Governor Hogan asked MHEC and other state agencies to participate in community service projects to assist in the city’s recovery.

HCPSS joined MHEC to help Lockerman-Bundy Elementary School, located in one of the city’s most deeply afflicted areas. HCPSS donated 700 books to the school for students in grades K–5. One of the school’s major priorities is to raise the reading levels of students whose performance levels were far below average on the statewide assessments.

MHEC staff distributed the books and other donated supplies at a Day of Service event at the school on Wednesday, August 26, held in conjunction with the Governor’s Maryland Unites Day of Service campaign.

The Day of Service began at 10 a.m. with a brief introductory program in the school cafeteria. HCPSS Superintendent Renee A. Foose joined Maryland Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford, MHEC representatives, and other elected officials and local dignitaries for the event.

“A community in distress affects every one of us, and we must all pitch in to find solutions,” said Dr. Foose. “I am proud that our system has joined the Governor’s initiative to offer hope to children who have suffered so much.”
