HCPSS Students and Staff Recognized at June Board of Education Meetings

Superintendent Renee A. Foose recognized the following student and staff achievements at the Board of Education meetings on June 11 and 25:

Students:

River Hill High School student Patrick Mikulis ended his term as the 2014–2015 Student Member to the Board of Education on June 25, 2015. The Howard County Board of Education recognized Mikulis’ service by approving a proclamation, which stated in part, “Patrick brought an informed, thoughtful student perspective to Board deliberations and performed his responsibilities with integrity and wisdom.” Mikulis will attend the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business Honors Program.

Glenelg High School junior Kevin Zheng has been recognized by Howard County as theYouth Volunteer of the Year. Zheng has completed more than 400 hours of volunteer service since entering high school. He works with several school and community organizations and co-founded Glenelg High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club.

Staff:

Laurel Woods Elementary School fourth-grade instructional team leader Jessica McNeill has been awarded the Teach It Forward scholarship. McNeill was chosen by 2014 Maryland Teacher of the Year, Jody Zepp. The scholarship will enable McNeill to earn a master’s degree at the University of Phoenix.

Monica Pringle, area manager in our Office of Pupil Transportation, has received the 2015 Excellence in Schools Award from the ARC of Maryland and the ARC of Howard County for her positive and collaborative approach to serving all students.

Jennifer Borgerding, French teacher at Howard High School, has been named the HCPSS Language Teacher of the Year for 2015. She will represent Howard County in competing for Maryland Language Teacher of the Year.

Three HCPSS Gifted and Talented resource teachers — Anjan Nath of Clemens Crossing Elementary School, Bill McCauley of Folly Quarter Middle School, and Michelle Bagley from Centennial High School have all been awarded the Outstanding Educator in Gifted and Talented Education — Teacher as Leader award from the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education.

Schools:

This year’s “It’s Academic” team from Centennial High School came in first place in the show’s 2015 Superbowl, a competition among the best teams in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia. The TV team was composed of recent graduates Ryan Heslin and Anant Mishra, and rising senior Gary Tse. The team’s coaches, Eric and Sara Seifter, have been with the Centennial teams for 15 years.

Young Audiences/Arts for Learning Maryland awarded Ducketts Lane Elementary School the prestigious Arts for Learning School Leadership Award to recognize the creation of a clay mural about the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. The award exemplifies excellence, innovation and creativity in the arts.

Additional:

Commencement videos posted on the HCPSS website have reached a record high number of views. Online graduation videos have so far exceeded 28,000 views total. This number equates to approximately 152,000 total minutes watched. It represents viewers from 40 countries on every continent except Australia and Antarctica.
