Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Partners with Veterans Elementary School

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Greater Howard County Pearls is partnering with Veterans Elementary School to implement mentoring programs and activities that promote academic excellence, leadership skills and healthy lifestyles for students.

The partnership will be formalized with an official signing Monday, October 27 at the Sheraton Columbia Waterside Restaurant, 10207 Wincopin Circle.

Under the terms of the partnership agreement, the sorority will provide tutors for students in need of additional support and will collaborate with VES staff to develop a “Read with Me” program to assist students with reading and comprehension skills. Sorority members also will coordinate with school staff to “adopt” families by providing food for holiday meals and will support various school wellness programs.

In line with Vision 2018, this partnership supports initiatives that focus on eliminating achievement gaps.

Howard County Board of Education Chairman Ellen Flynn Giles, Board Member Lawrence Walker, Veterans Elementary School Principal Bob Bruce and Assistant Principal Julie Schruefer will join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Greater Howard County Pearls President Rosalynne Atterbeary, Chaplain Margaret Bradley and sorority representatives to sign the formal partnership agreement at the October 27 event.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is an international service organization that was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African-American college-educated women. Alpha Kappa Alpha comprises more than 265,000 members in 986 graduate and undergraduate chapters worldwide.

The Howard County Public School System’s Partnerships Office unites businesses and community organizations with schools to enhance the educational experience. Partnerships benefit schools, businesses, and the entire community by leveraging the resources of all participants. Partners may commit human or financial resources or other support.
