HCPSS Celebrates Thomas Viaduct Middle School Grand Opening

August 26th, 2014

Officials from the Howard County Public School System and county leaders celebrated the grand opening of Thomas Viaduct Middle School (TVMS) with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 24.

A state-of-the-art facility, TVMS has capacity for more than 660 students and features five science laboratories, outdoor learning areas, innovative world language programming, technology-curriculum infusion, and career assessment and preparation.

Its “green” design conserves energy and natural resources, and is eligible for US Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Officials said the new facility, the second new school to open in the county in two years, supports the system’s vision to engage students, teachers and communities in building a world-class system of secondary education.

“Thomas Viaduct is the launch site for several pivotal initiatives in academic development and social engagement,” said HCPSS Superintendent Renee A. Foose. “We are extremely excited about this newest facility, and the potential it has to shape new concepts for instruction throughout the entire system.”

Other speakers included Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, Howard County Council Vice Chair Courtney Watson, Howard County Board of Education Chairman Ellen Flynn Giles and Thomas Viaduct Middle School Principal Shiney Ann John.
