Teacher and Related Professional Application and Hiring Process

All individuals applying for teacher, media specialist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, reading specialist, school counselor, school mental health therapist, school psychologist or speech-language pathologist positions must complete all of the items listed below.

Please review all steps before applying.

STEP 1: APPLICATION

1. Complete a Howard County Public School System online employment application for every position of interest with the required documents as specified below. All applicants must complete all sections of the online employment application to be considered for employment with HCPSS. PDS interns and student teachers should list their internship/student teaching experiences on page 10 (Work History) of the online application.

2. The following documents must be received along with your application as soon as possible. All documents, except references, may be attached electronically to the application. Once an online application is submitted it cannot be updated electronically. Any additional updates should be uploaded to the applicant’s “profile screen” and/or delivered to the Office of Human Resources at 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City, Maryland 21042.

  • Three professional references. (All references must be mailed directly to the HCPSS by each individual serving as a reference and should address performance during the most recent school year.) References hand delivered to the HCPSS must be individually sealed in a school envelope.
    • Experienced teachers must request a reference from their most current principal. Additional references should be from an assistant principal, department chair or team leader.
    • Experienced teachers can submit copies of final evaluations as supplemental references provided that they contain a narrative portion.
    • Beginning teachers should submit student teaching/internship evaluations or a college placement file that contains student teaching/internship evaluations. The references must be from a mentor teacher and a university supervisor.
    • In some situations, other professional references may be accepted.
  • College transcripts .
      • Photocopies of unofficial or official transcripts are acceptable to begin the process. Applicants should ensure that official transcripts are forwarded to the Office of Human Resources as soon as possible.
  • Copy of Maryland Educator Certificate, certificate of eligibility or other valid state teaching certificate.
  • Praxis Series test scores or other test scores required to obtain an out of state certificate.

3. After you have submitted your online application, you will receive an e-mail acknowledging receipt of your application.

STEP 2: APPLICATION REVIEW AND PRELIMINARY INTERVIEW PROCESS

1. The HCPSS will review your application and accompanying documents.

2. Interested candidates may visit the HCPSS recruitment section of the web site to review the recruitment schedule and/or sign up for a preliminary interview.

3. Based upon preliminary interview results, system needs, and a completed application packet, candidates may be referred to a Curriculum Interview. All candidates must be referred by the Office of Human Resources. Curriculum staff will not consider candidates who have not been referred by the Office of Human Resources.

4. Based upon the curriculum interview results, system needs, and a completed application packet, candidates may be referred to a Site-Based Interview.

STEP 3: SITE-BASED INTERVIEWS

1. Qualified candidates may have the opportunity to interview with the principal or his/her designee as positions become available that match with the candidate’s experience and certification area. All candidates must be referred by the Office of Human Resources. Principals will not consider candidates who have not been referred by the Office of Human Resources.

2. Candidates may be asked to interview for several positions at different times.

3. The school-based administrator will make the final recommendation, based upon the interview, to the Office of Human Resources.

4. Individuals not recommended for a specific vacancy may continue to be considered for other positions.

STEP 4: CONTRACT OFFER

1. Based upon the school administrator’s recommendations, a complete application packet, and a final review of all submitted materials, the Office of Human Resources will extend job offers to selected candidates.

2. Candidates being offered a teaching position with the HCPSS will be contacted directly by the Office of Human Resources.

3. When the offer of employment is made, a tentative salary placement is determined based on available information from the employment application.

NOTE:
Please keep in mind that the above steps may take place over a series of weeks or months depending on the current needs of the HCPSS. Also, we do not accept paper or faxed applications.
