Teacher and Related Professional Application and Hiring Process
All individuals applying for teacher, media specialist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, reading specialist, school counselor, school psychologist or speech-language pathologist positions must complete all of the items listed below.
Please review all steps before applying.
STEP 1: APPLICATION
1. Complete a Howard County Public School System employment application.
2. The following documents must be submitted with your application as soon as possible:
- Three professional references.
- Experienced teachers must submit a reference from their most current principal. Additional references should be from an assistant principal, department chair or team leader.
- Experienced teachers can submit copies of final evaluations as references provided that it contains a narrative portion.
- Beginning teachers should submit student teaching evaluations or a college placement file that contains student teaching evaluations. The references must be from a mentor teacher and a university supervisor.
- In some situations, other professional references may be accepted.
- College transcripts
- Photocopies of unofficial or official transcripts are acceptable to begin the process.
- Photocopy of Maryland Teaching Certificate or certificate of eligibility or other valid state teaching certificate
- Praxis Series test scores or other test scores required to obtain an out of state certificate.
- Signed statement concerning Maryland employment laws
- Applicant Population Record Form
- Representation Fee Requirements Form
3. After you have submitted your application, you will receive a postcard acknowledging receipt of your application.
STEP 2: APPLICATION REVIEW AND PRELIMINARY INTERVIEW PROCESS
1. The HCPSS will review your application and accompanying documents.
2. Interested candidates may visit the HCPSS recruitment section of the web site to review the recruitment schedule and/or sign up for a preliminary interview.
3. Based upon preliminary interview results, system needs, and a completed application packet, candidates may be referred to a Curriculum Interview.
4. Based upon the curriculum interview results, system needs, and a completed application packet, candidates may be referred to a Site-Based Interview.
STEP 3: SITE-BASED INTERVIEWS
1. Qualified candidates may have the opportunity to interview with the principal or his/her designee as positions become available that match with the candidate’s experience and certification area.
2. Candidates may be asked to interview for several positions at different times.
3. The school-based administrator will make the final recommendation, based upon the interview, to the Office of Human Resources.
4. Individuals not recommended for a specific vacancy may continue to be considered for other positions.
STEP 4: CONTRACT OFFER
1. Based upon the school administrator’s recommendations, a complete application packet, and a final review of all submitted materials, the Office of Human Resources will extend job offers to selected candidates.
2. Candidates being offered a teaching position with the HCPSS will be contacted directly by the Office of Human Resources.
3. When the offer of employment is made, a tentative salary placement is determined based on available information from the employment application.
NOTE:
Please keep in mind that the above steps may take place over a series of weeks or months depending on the current needs of the HCPSS.
