Frequently Asked Questions - Teaching Vacancies
How will I know the status of my application?
When an application for employment is received, a permanent file is created in our database. An e-mail acknowledging receipt of the application is sent. The application is then considered to be active. The application will remain active for two years. Applicants who are not hired are automatically sent a reactivation message during the winter months. Active applicants should upload any updated materials to their “profile screen” and/or deliver those materials on a yearly basis. Inactive applications are retained for two years and then destroyed if no further interest is shown.

I don't have a teaching degree. What opportunities are there for me? OR How do I become a teacher if I did not major in Education?
Howard County usually does not consider for teaching positions those who do not have a degree in education. Occasionally we will hire a person who is close to being fully certified as a teacher. In that case, a provisional contract would be given and a conditional Maryland teacher certificate would be issued. All teaching candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelors Degree.
What do I have to do to get a Maryland teacher certificate?
If you wish further information about teacher certification requirements, you may contact a local four-year college that offers a program leading towards teacher certification or write or call the Maryland State Department of Education, 410-767-0412.
You should write to:
Maryland State Department of Education
Office of Certification
200 West Baltimore Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
In addition to the cover letter, you must include official transcripts from all colleges attended and copies of applicable test scores. MSDE takes about 12 weeks to respond to your request. You may also wish to try the MSDE web site at www.marylandpublicschools.org/MSDE
When does Howard County begin hiring?
The Office of Human Resources begins sending candidates to Howard County schools for interviews for vacant positions in late June. All candidates must have a complete file and have had a Preliminary Interview and a Curriculum Interview in order to be referred. All candidates must be referred by the Office of Human Resources. Principals will not consider applicants who have not been referred by the Office of Human Resources.
The following time frame is offered as a sample to help candidates during the process:
January through February:
- HCPSS begins staffing decisions
- Candidates encouraged to submit applications
- Ongoing Preliminary (PIV) and Curriculum (CIV) interviews
March through late April:
- HCPSS involuntarily transferred teachers and teachers returning from leave are placed in existing vacancies
- Candidates encouraged to submit applications
- Ongoing PIVs and CIVs
May through late August:
- HCPSS voluntary transferred teachers and new candidates are placed in existing vacancies
- Candidates encouraged to submit applications
- Ongoing PIVs, CIVs and Site-based (SIV) interviews
How do I get an interview?
Applicants with a complete teacher application file may check the teacher recruitment link on the HCPSS website to sign up for a preliminary interview. Interviews will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis until the allotted interview slots are filled. After the preliminary interview slots are filled, applicants will be scheduled on an individual basis based upon anticipated vacancies.
If you are a student just completing a teacher certification program, you should check the Howard County web site's Teacher Recruitment page or with your career planning office to find out if Howard County will be visiting your college or a local job fair to interview student teachers. Howard County visits most colleges in Maryland and job fairs in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Candidates will be contacted through the Office of Human Resources to set up curriculum interviews. Curriculum coordinators and/or designee(s) will not interview candidates without a referral from the Office of Human Resources.
Please contact us at careers@hcpss.org or by telephone (410-313-6693) or by fax (410-313-6692) if you are unable to obtain the information you need. We will happy to assist you in locating a college or job fair that we will be visiting.
