Friends Of Education Award
Howard County is a community that values education and cherishes its children. As a result, many Howard County community members, businesses and organizations donate their time and talents in support of public education.
The Howard County Board of Education has established the Friends of Education Award to recognize and show appreciation to those who have made exemplary contributions to public education and to increase awareness of the importance of community involvement to the achievement of the school system’s mission and goals.
Who Does The Award Recognize?
The Friends of Education Award recognizes an individual, business, or organization for an innovative or unique contribution that:
- Directly supports the school system’s mission of excellence in teaching and learning.
- Supports student achievement and/or safe schools.
- Is significant in its scope. In the case of organizations such as PTAs, the contribution must be beyond the normal scope of activities.
Who Is Eligible?
Any member of the Howard County community or any group, organization or business located in or serving Howard County may be nominated for the Friends of Education Award.
There are three categories:
- Individual
- Business
- Non-profit group, organization or association
Who May Nominate?
Any employee of the Howard County Public School System, Howard County resident or member of a group, organization, association or business located in or serving Howard County may submit a nomination.
What Is Required For Nomination?
A nomination form is required for each nomination. To obtain nomination forms:
To nominate, complete the three-page application and include three (3) signed letters of recommendation.
Nomination Deadline
Completed nomination forms are due by February 1, 2013, to:

Nominees and recipients will be notified by March 18, and awards will be presented by the Board on April 11, 2013.
Mission And Goals
The Howard County Public School System will ensure excellence in teaching and learning so that each student will participate responsibly in a diverse and changing world.
- Goal 1 - Each child regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability or socioeconomic status will meet the rigorous performance standards that have been established. All diploma-bound students will perform on or above grade level in all measured content areas.
- Goal 2 - Each school will provide a safe and nurturing school environment that values our diversity and commonality.
